Georgia – on the road to a bright future

Located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Georgia is at the heart of intercontinental transport between East and West.

Bordered by the Black Sea to the west, Russia to the north and east, Turkey to the southwest, Armenia to the south and Azerbijan to the southeast, transport in Georgia is provided by 1,576 kms of railway and over 21,100 kms of road. There are four main sea terminals, four international airports and four main domestic airports.

Georgia’s potential as a strategic international transport hub in an environment of increasing globalisation, is a fact that the Georgian government has recognised as key to economic growth, devising large scale plans and investing heavily in the sector.

The Georgian Department of Transport and Logistics Development has identified the following areas to act on:

  • Identifying opportunity within the transport and logistics sectors
  • Developing transport legislation
  • Creating and signing international agreements
  • Creating and implementing effective short-, medium- and long-term strategic responses to problems and opportunities identified
  • Initiating and implementing strategically important projects for the development of logistics and the increase of the country’s transport potential
  • International cooperation with organisations, programs and financial institutions

Within these ambitious plans, the government aims to prioritise the following:
  • Development of logistics systems and multimodal transportation
  • Aligning the legal base more closely with European legislation
  • Deepening international relations
  • Signing international agreements for the development of transport links
  • Improving safety and increasing competitiveness of transport systems
  • Improving the overall level of service

The new and improved Georgian transport sector is succeeding in making the country highly attractive for additional cargo flow – including, of course, international drug delivery and the transportation of medical equipment – a fact that has put Georgia on the list of COREX Logistics’ key new markets. With continued investment, and execution of these ambitious plans, there’s no doubt that this jewel of the Caucasus has a bright and successful future ahead as a major centre for clinical trials.
